Grow Block Fruiting Guide
This guide covers four different methods to fruit your mushrooms. Choose the method that best suits your environment, tools. Additionally, an alternative method is provided for those seeking a more low-maintenance approach.
Method 1: Open-Air Fruiting (Using a Cardboard Box)
Materials Needed:
Materials Needed:
- Cardboard box large enough to hold the fruiting block
- Spray bottle
Steps:
Steps:
- Cut the sides of the bag and top. Fold over one flap of the bag to create a microclimate that will stay moist. Place the mushroom fruiting block inside the cardboard box. Ensure the box is open to allow airflow.
- Spray the inside of the box and the block with water twice a day to maintain high humidity. The goal is to keep the surface of the block moist but not soaked. As well as keep the cardboard nice and wet.
- Keep the box in a shaded area with indirect sunlight.
- Watch for small, white growths that will develop into mature fruiting bodies.
- Harvest when the fruiting bodies reach maturity (dropping spores) or when they begin to turn slightly yellow.
Tips
Tips
- Maintain consistent humidity by monitoring the box. If the environment is dry, you may need to spray more frequently.
- Ensure there is no standing water on the block surface or fruiting bodies.
Method 2: Shotgun Fruiting Chamber
Materials Needed:
Materials Needed:
- Clear plastic storage bin (with holes drilled on all sides)
- Perlite
- Spray bottle
Steps:
Steps:
- Prepare the shotgun fruiting chamber by drilling holes (1/4-inch diameter) evenly spaced on all sides, including the top and bottom of the bin.
- Place a layer of dampened perlite at the bottom of the chamber. This will help maintain humidity levels.
- Cut open an X shaped slit on the bag as well as ventilate the air out of the top portion of the grow block. Put the Lion’s Mane fruiting block inside the chamber, directly on the perlite or on a rack above it.
- Mist the chamber and block 2-3 times a day to keep the humidity high.
- Allow indirect light to reach the chamber to stimulate fruiting.
- Monitor for growth of fruiting bodies and harvest when they reach maturity.
Tips
Tips
- Ensure that the perlite stays moist to keep the humidity high inside the chamber.
- Adjust the misting frequency based on the humidity level in the chamber.
Method 3: Fruiting Chamber with Humidity & Fresh Air Exchange Controls
Materials Needed:
Materials Needed:
- Fully enclosed fruiting chamber with humidity and air exchange controls
- Humidifier
- Air pump or fresh air exchange system
Steps:
Steps:
- Set up your fruiting chamber by ensuring it has proper humidity and fresh air exchange mechanisms. Aim for 80-90% humidity and timed regular airflow to prevent CO2 buildup.
- Cut an X shaped slit on the side of the bag as well as ventilate air out of the top portion of the grow bag. Place the Lion’s Mane fruiting block inside the chamber.
- Set the humidifier to maintain the humidity level between 80-90%.
- Ensure there is adequate fresh air exchange using the air pump or system to simulate natural airflow.
- Monitor growth and adjust the humidity or airflow settings as necessary.
- Harvest when the fruiting bodies have reached the desired maturity, with well-developed spines.
Tips
Tips
- A digital hygrometer and thermometer can help you monitor and maintain optimal conditions inside the chamber.
- This method typically yields denser, larger fruiting bodies due to the controlled environment.
Alternative Method 4: In-Vitro Fruiting (Inside the Grow Bag)
Materials Needed:
Materials Needed:
Grow bag (already inoculated with Lion’s Mane mycelium)
Steps:
Steps:
- Leave the fruiting block inside the grow bag, allowing it to fruit directly from the bag.
- Place the grow bag in an area away from direct light, and avoid any major temperature shifts. (Don't place near stove or other appliances that generate heat. Don't place block in front of HVAC vents)
- The fruits will not be as dense, but this method is lower maintenance and less prone to contamination.
- Harvest when the fruiting bodies have matured.
Tips
Tips
- Keep the bag in a shaded area that is relatively temperature stable.
- Monitor for growth inside the bag, harvest when desired.
